AN appeal for help has been issued to trace the source of oil pollution affecting a tributary of the River Worth in Keighley.
The Environment Agency was alerted about a fortnight ago to a black, oily substance in the water near Marriner's Walk, off South Street.
Environment officers are investigating and have been using absorbent pads and booms to contain the oil, reducing its impact and preventing it from entering the River Worth.
But the substance is continuing to enter the watercourse and the investigation has so far failed to identify a source.
Mark West, environment management team leader at the agency, said: "We’ve been successful in containing the oil in the tributary, but it is ongoing so we need to find the source as soon as possible.
"The pollutant may be entering the watercourse from a leaky container, or it could be that someone is knowingly disposing of it illegally.
"Any information the public can provide would be greatly appreciated."
Anybody able to help should phone the agency hotline on 0800 807060.
