Town Hall square was a blaze of claret and amber as several hundred Bradford City supporters gave a heroes’ welcome to their team in 1969.

The players, accompanied by their manager, directors and staff arrived by coach to attend a civic reception at the City Hall in honour of winning promotion to the Third Division.

Speaking to the crowd, Mr. Stafford Heginbotham, Bradford City Chairman, said: “This is only the beginning of what we are going to do in this city soccer wise."

The police had a hard task keeping the fans back as the players boarded the coach. Tony Leighton and captain Tom Hallett both lost their club ties, taken by the enthusiastic youngsters as souvenirs.
