CONCERNS over protected trees have led to a housing development appeal being dismissed.

In May 2018 Bradford Council refused plans to build 10 semi-detached houses at 289 Beacon Road. They said the development, proposed by Kamla Poppleton, was “undesirable” because it would lead to the felling of a number of trees protected by tree preservation orders.

An appeal against the decision was submitted, and almost a year after the Council’s refusal, a government inspector has dismissed the appeal.

Felicity Thompson said: “The trees on this site make a significant positive contribution to the visual amenity of the area. The majority of the trees are highly visible in public views because of their size and positioning within the site.

“The loss of a large number of prominent trees would significantly detract from the overall appearance of the site and its amenity value. Whilst the proposed replacement planting would ameliorate some of that loss, it would not provide adequate mitigation for the loss of substantial mature trees, particularly because of the time it would take to reach maturity.”

She said the proximity of trees to the new houses would also harm the amenity of future occupiers.
