WELL-LOVED Queensbury woman Doris Woodhead has sadly passed away at the age of 94.

She was the widow of Leonard Woodhead, councillor and county councillor representing Queensbury and Shelf.

For many years during the 1960s and 1970s the pair took active roles in village life, from the centenary celebrations of Queensbury in 1963 to membership of most of Queensbury's organisations, such as the Civic Society and the History Society.

They were also ardent supporters of the Black Dyke Mills Band.

An active member of the Baptist Chapel, Doris sang in the choir (Handel was always a favourite) and helped with the organisation of the wonderfully memorable celebrations on Christmas Eve.

Around 50 people would turn up to be entertained by games devised by Doris and Leonard, eat a traditional pea and pie supper and sing carols around the piano on the stroke of midnight.

Doris was a modest but hard worker, often fundraising behind the scenes, making endless cakes and marmalade to support local charities.

She leaves two daughters, Myra and Linda (who now lives in Australia), five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Doris passed away on May 9, and the funeral will be held on May 30 in Newcastle, where Myra now lives.
