In May 1988, high-flying Woodend Middle School pupils had hit on the perfect way to enjoy their social studies lesson. They chartered their own aeroplane to get a birds-eye view of West Yorkshire.
The youngsters had been learning about maps and route-ways like canals, railways and motorways at the Shipley school. The Capital airline at Leeds Bradford Airport provided a Shorts 360 plane and the 11 and 12-year-olds enjoyed a 20-minute flight over places like Ilkley, Harrogate and Leeds.
Teacher Dave Manning decided the best way to illustrate the lessons would be to take the skies for an eagle view of the area. More than 100 youngsters enjoyed a 20-minute flight over places like Ilkley, Harrogate and Leeds.
