SHOPPERS in the Kirkgate Centre poured into the new Boyes shop on the first day of trading.

Stock and 22 staff were moved across from the old shop of 15 years, in North Parade, to its new home in the Kirkgate Centre.

Around 50 shoppers were the first through the doors to peruse the shelves and take home a bargain.

Noreen Bussey was one of them.

She said: “It has changed a lot from the old shop.

“It’s more modern and it’s bright and airy.

“It’s easier to find things.”

The family-run Boyes business is based in Scarborough and was founded in 1881 by William Boyes.

TJ Hughes is already the new anchor tenant in the Kirkgate mall after its new store opened earlier this month.

Catherine Riley, centre manager, said the arrival of Boyes will continue to improve the Kirkgate Centre’s fortunes.

She said: “We’ve already seen an increase in footfall and expect that to be built on with Boyes opening.

“People are staying longer in the centre now.”
