A DANGER driver whose car took off on two wheels “like a scene from a movie” before smashing into a parked vehicle in Bradford has been jailed for 12 months.

Darren Wright, who had 30 previous convictions for 93 offences, accelerated away from the police in an unlicensed and uninsured Volkswagen Bora that officers thought had suspicious number plates.

Wright, 36, of Victoria Road, Eccleshill, Bradford, had seven wraps of heroin in the car during the 90 second police pursuit in rush hour traffic.

The incident happened on August 10 last year, Bradford Crown Court heard.

The high-speed chase between Bolton Lane and Ashbourne Way in Bradford ended when Wright struck a speed bump and lost control of the car.

The court was told how the car then hit a parked Volkswagen Passat, propelling it down the road and strewing wreckage along the street.

The Passat was a hire car and the damage to it resulted in the man who leased it paying excess on his vehicle insurance and losing a weekend’s work, the court heard.

Prosecutor Michael Smith explained that children had been playing football in the road shortly before Wright sped on to the scene.

He was arrested at the scene with the wraps of Class A drugs, the court heard.

Wright pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without insurance or a licence and simple possession of heroin.

His previous convictions included aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving, Mr Smith said.

John Bottomley, Wright’s solicitor advocate, said he had turned his life around since the tragic loss of his mother to cancer recently.

Wright was now drug free and had stopped committing offences.

He had a partner and had previously held down work as an industrial cleaner.

Wright pleaded guilty to the offences at the magistrates’ court and Mr Bottomley asked the judge to pass a suspended sentence of imprisonment on his client.

The Recorder of Bradford, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, said Wright had a poor record.

The court was told that Wright’s record included a conviction for wounding.

He had served 15 months in a young offender institution for dangerous driving.

He was on a community order when he was caught driving the Volkswagen Bora with no licence or insurance.

Wright shot away from the police in heavy traffic before smashing into the parked car, the court heard.

His vehicle had taken off on two wheels in an incident described by an eyewitness as “like a scene from a movie.”

Wright was jailed for a total of 12 months for the offences.

His three-year driving ban was extended by six months to take account of the time he will spend in prison.

Wright must then take an extended retest to obtain a driving licence.
