THE Debenhams store in the Broadway Shopping Centre in Bradford has been spared closure in the latest list of the company's closure programme.

Debenhams confirmed plans this morning for up to 22 store closures, putting 1,200 jobs at risk.

There are no Yorkshire stores included in the list.

The company says these "decisive actions" will serve to keep Debenhams on a stable financial footing and ensure the future of the company.

Ian Ward, General Manager at The Broadway, Bradford, said: “Debenhams remains a key brand within The Broadway and we can confirm that business will continue as normal, following strong footfall over the Easter break.”

Terry Duddy, Executive Chairman of Debenhams, said: "The issues facing the UK high street are very well known. Debenhams has a clear strategy and a bright future, but in order for the business to prosper, we need to restructure the group's store portfolio and its balance sheet, which are not appropriate for today's much changed retail environment.

"Our priority is to save as many stores and as many jobs as we can, while making the business fit for the future."

The announcement was part of a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) which is part of the company's restructuring and turnaround plan

A CVA is an insolvency procedure allows a company with debt problems or that is insolvent to reach a voluntary agreement with its business creditors regarding repayment of all, or part of its corporate debts over an agreed period of time.

In its statement the company says further store closures will be confirmed in due course, the final number being dependent on future trading performance, discussions with landlords regarding changes in lease terms and rental levels, and with local authorities regarding business rates.

Stores expected to close in 2020 are: Altrincham, Ashford, Birmingham Fort, Canterbury, Chatham, Eastbourne, Folkestone, Great Yarmouth, Guildford, Kirkcaldy, Orpington, Slough, Southport, Southsea, Staines, Stockton, Walton, Wandsworth, Welwyn Garden City, Wimbledon, Witney, Wolverhampton.
