NEW TV drama Gentleman Jack, partly filmed in Bradford, is to have a red carpet Yorkshire premiere.

The BBC1 series, starring Suranne Jones as Regency landowner Anne Lister, is by Sally Wainwright, who wrote TV hits Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax and Bronte drama To Walk Invisible.

It was filmed in Little Germany last summer, and other West Yorkshire locations including Halifax’s Shibden Hall, Sowerby Bridge, Huddersfield, Batley and Leeds.

Sally Wainwright will join fellow Bafta-winner Suranne Jones for a premiere at Square Chapel Arts Centre in Halifax on Thursday, May 9. Episode One of the eight-part series will be screened at the event and Sally, Suranne and co-star Sophie Rundle will meet fans on the red carpet. Following the screening, they will talk about the production process and historical research, and take questions from the audience. Admission is by ticket only, with the public invited to apply for tickets in an online draw.

Set in 1832, Gentleman Jack is the epic story of Anne Lister who, returning after years of exotic travel and social climbing, sets about transforming her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall. To do this she must re-open her coal mines and marry well. But charismatic, single-minded, swashbuckling Anne Lister has no intention of marrying a man. She plans to marry a woman - and she must be a seriously wealthy one.

Set in the changing world of Halifax, the cradle of the industrial revolution, the drama explores Anne’s relationships with her family, servants, tenants and industrial rivals, who use dirty tricks to bring her down. At its heart is her relationship with her would-be wife, Ann Walker.

Suranne Jones, who shot to fame as Karen McDonald in Coronation Street and went on to star in TV dramas such as Doctor Foster, Save Me and Scott and Bailey, leads a star-studded cast in Gentleman Jack. The cast also includes Bodyguard and Peaky Blinders actress Sophie Rundle, Game of Thrones actress Gemma Whelan, Timothy West, Katherine Jelly and Stephanie Cole.

Sally Wainwright said: “Filming Gentleman Jack at Shibden Hall and surrounding areas was a brilliant experience for cast and crew. I’m delighted local people now have a chance to attend the Yorkshire premiere.”

The ticket ballot closes on Sunday at 10pm. Each person can apply for a maximum of two tickets, allocated via a random draw, at bbc.co.uk/showsandtours.
