THE 56 people who lost their lives in the Bradford City fire on May 11, 1985 were commemorated over the weekend through the 34th annual Valley Parade Memorial Football Tournament.
The contest, which saw teams from Bradford City, Lincoln City and Bradford’s twin town of Hamm in Germany play against junior clubs from across the district, was held at Marley Activities and Coaching Centre in Keighley.
The weekend began with a minute’s silence, which all players, coaches and match officials took part in.
The spirit of the event is to promote friendship through football, with fair play trophies awarded on both days.
The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Zafar Ali, attended yesterday afternoon to present the trophies and medals alongside Mark Fairhurst, the National Chair of the Prison Officers Association, which sponsors the event.
Phil Barker, Bradford Council’s Assistant Director for Sport and Culture, said the event is a “fitting tribute” to those who died and helps to remember the past, while celebrating the future of football in Bradford and the district.
