What we know about the Ilkley and Marsden Moor fires

  • Firefighters were called to the scene at around 3.10pm on Saturday

WEST Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews remain at the scene of moorland fires at Ilkley and Marsden which started this weekend.

Ten crews from the district are in attendance.

A spokesman said they hoped the fires were getting under control with crews in attendance to help prevent further outbreaks.

The fire on Marsden Moor broke out on Sunday night and is thought had been started from a barbecue.

Meanwhile, people are still being urged to stay away from Ilkley Moor following Saturday's major fire.

Police officers were deployed to cordon the moor off due to "dangerous conditions".

Firefighters are at the scene from around the district and a helicopter was drafted in the douse the moorland with water.

A number of jets were also used.

Vera Woodhead shared this video from the scene yesterday morning.

She said: "Heartbreaking to see the effects of yesterday’s Ilkley Moor fire."

The blaze broke out on the hottest day of the year and temperatures are expected to reach highs of 24°C today.

Around 70 firefighters remain at the scene.

Specialist equipment is being used, with moorland rescue and welfare units deployed. 

Emergency services were called to the fire, in the White Wells area, at around 3.10pm yesterday afternoon and firefighters have been in attendance overnight. 

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn sent a message of support out on Twitter.

He said: "Awful scenes on Ilkey Moor and yet more reminders of why we urgently need to tackle climate change.

"Thanks to the firefighters on the front line working in such difficult conditions."
