YORKSHIRE and Warwickshire played out a thrilling Good Friday tie as ball significantly challenged bat in the Royal London one-day Cup at Edgbaston.

The Vikings slipped to 33-4 and 89-5 in pursuit of 271 before Jonny Tattersall and Tim Bresnan led superb a recovery with a 138 stand.

Tattersall hit 79 off 81 balls and Bresnan 89 off 88. They took the target to 80 off 10 overs and 44 off the last five, only to fall within the space of four balls (235-7).

That target became 20 off two overs and 10 off the last with two wickets in hand, bowled by young quick Henry Brookes.

Mat Pillans then fell before Josh Poysden, against his former county, needed two off the last ball and ran a bye to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.

It means that heading into Sunday’s Roses clash at Emerald Headingley against Lancashire, Yorkshire have one from two in the North Group.

This fixture was a throwback to when scores of 260 to 280 were ultra competitive instead of the present when teams are regularly posting upwards of 350 on flat pitches.

This surface was by no means a batsman’s graveyard, but it was two paced and made acceleration tricky, highlighted best by Ambrose’s 77 for the hosts coming off 108 balls with five fours.

After Warwickshire had posted 270-8, Yorkshire struggled against pacy new ball pair Brookes and Chris Woakes, who claimed two wickets apiece.

Brookes bowled Tom Kohler-Cadmore and got Adam Lyth the same way off an under-edge.

England’s Woakes, fighting his way back to fitness from a knee injury, then had Harry Brook caught in the gully following an attempted pull before Gary Ballance miscued to cover.

From there, it was always going to be an uphill battle.

But wicketkeeper Tattersall and Bresnan ensured it was a battle the Vikings did not lose.

Tattersall shared 56 for the fourth wicket with David Willey, who hit an important 40, to stem the tide.

Willey miscued a pull at seamer George Panayi to mid-on to fall for 40, leaving the score at 89-5 in the 22nd over.

But Tattersall and Bresnan, dropped on 14, rebuilt again and then put Warwickshire under significant pressure with their busy and positive 24-over alliance.

They brought up respective 56-ball fifties and took the score to 191-5 after 40 overs with a century stand.

Unfortunately five overs later, Tattersall was bowled by Jeetan Patel and Bresnan slapped Woakes to cover, leaving the score at 235-7 in the 46th.

Then came the drama at the death.

Earlier, Pillans backed up his five-wicket haul in beating Leicestershire on Wednesday with another three, while Bresnan and Poysden struck twice apiece at either end of the innings as the Vikings bowled well.

Bresnan bowled Ed Pollock and had the other opener Dom Sibley caught behind off bat and pad - 53-2 in the 10th over.

Steve Patterson, there at the end with the bat, was miserly, conceding only 14 runs in his first six overs as the Bears struggled to gain momentum.

But former England wicketkeeper batsman Ambrose shared 40 for the third wicket with Sam Hain (40) and then found useful support from the middle to lower order as the total headed into challenging territory.

He added 62 for the fifth wicket with former White Rose all-rounder Will Rhodes as they advanced from 155-4 in the 32nd, with Rhodes aggressive for 43.

Ambrose later shared in stands of 41 and 39 for the fifth and seventh wickets with Liam Banks (31) and Alex Thomson, 23 not out.

Bresnan (2-27 from six overs) and Willey only bowled 12 overs between them.
