GIRLS’ rugby union has been given a boost in the Bradford district, thanks to an event held by a school in the city.

Woodhouse Grove School, based in Apperley Bridge, hosted a girls’ rugby development day at the school, led by the school’s specialist staff and coaches, for girls from schools in the district.

More than 60 girls from Ghyll Royd School, Ilkley, Lady Lane Park School, Bingley, and Woodhouse Grove’s Bronte House took part in the event.

Coaches from the school and Yorkshire Carnegie Academy ran drills to develop the girls’ basic rugby skills, before taking part in some games of touch rugby.

Toby Waterhouse, rugby coach at the school, said: “The girls have been outstanding.

“We have taken the skills they already had in abundance from playing other sports at their current schools, put a rugby ball into their hands, coached them in the basic laws of rugby and the progress they’ve shown in just one day has been incredible.

“It’s great for girls to have another sporting option.”
