WORLD Earth Day is on Easter Monday and the British Heart Foundation (BHF) is calling on fashion lovers to swap their ’bought new’ clothes for a day of showing off their second-hand treasures.

Public awareness about the damage caused by the fashion industry is increasing, with consumers keen to find a more environmentally friendly way to be fashion conscious.

Charity shops provide the perfect solution for those looking to make a positive change to their shopping habits.

Last year, the BHF saved over 70,000 tonnes of items from landfill; including 17,000 tonnes of pre-loved clothes.

Sue Tallant, current manager of the Northgate BHF in Bradford, said: ""Our second hand clothes are like brand new.

"People are shocked by the quality on offer at charity shops and the clothes often only cost about £3.

"I personally have no idea how people can afford to spend £50 at a time on new clothes. Buying them here saves money and the environment."

Ms Tallant is manager at the Ivegate BHF too, but due to underground flooding temporarily closing that store, she has been moved over to Northgate one.

The BHF offer a collection service every morning Monday to Friday. To have your clothes, handbags etc picked up by the Northgate BHF free of charge, contact 01274 729110.
