EVERYONE remembers their first set of wheels.

Raleigh Choppers and Grifters - now retro collectables - are a fond recollection from a generation who spent pleasurable time on two wheels.

The popularity of cycling is certainly increasing - the arrival of major cycling events such as the Tour de Yorkshire, which runs from May 2 to 5 this year taking in the county's sights and landmarks such as The Piece Hall, Halifax, Bronte country and beyond, and a consciousness to reduce pollution has led many to swap the car for pedal power on the daily commute.

For those interested in cycling, whether you've taken it up to help save the planet or if you're from a generation familiar with bygone bikes, The Vintage Bike Sale is bound to evoke fond memories.

Run in conjunction with the Margaret Carey Foundation, who have several vintage bikes that have been donated over the years, the event runs from 1 until 4pm on Saturday April 13 at Capital for Cycling in Hall Ings, Bradford.

David Robison, one of the directors of Bradford’s Capital of Cycling, a community hub launched nearly two years ago which is busy promoting cycling activities for health and well-being as well as other cycle-related initiatives, explains they already have many 'historically interesting' 'project bikes' needing love and attention.

"We don't have the time to fix them all up ourselves but know there's a lot of interest in vintage bikes, either for nostalgia or hipster reasons, or just a love of the designs and so on," said David.

"So instead of hoarding them, we thought we'd pull them all out and display them. Other exhibitors would be welcome if they get in touch with us," he added.

Expect some other interesting bike related bric-a-brac at the event - proceeds from which will go towards Margaret Carey Foundation which rescues and repairs scrapped bikes and wheelchairs as part of the community and prison-based projects it delivers, and Capital of Cycling.

David says they are also hoping to host a larger 'cycling festival' week during the summer offering cycling activities for all the family.
