COUNCILLORS have approved £300,000 of road resurfacing works.

Bradford Council's Area Committees are currently deciding which roads they will be able to allocate their annual £300,000 allocation for Highway maintenance.

Last week the Bradford West Area Committee agreed which roads in that area needed dealing with.

They chose Squire Green at Four Lane Ends, Smith Lane, Sowden Road and Highgate all in Heaton, Grattan Road, Lower Grattan Road, Galsworthy Avenue, Heaton, Cliffe Wood Avenue, Frizinghall, Bertram Road, Manningham, Wharncliffe Road, Frizinghall, Fearnsides Street, Manningham, Carlisle Street, Manningham, Conduit Street, Oaks Lane, Allerton, Freshfield Gardens, Allerton, Alexandra Street, Listerhills and Back St Margaret’s Terrace.

Originally the committee were advised to include Brownroyd Street, Girlington on the list, but not Alexandra Street and Back St Margaret's Terrace.

Street cleansing cuts won't be as bad as originally feared after last minute budget change

But Councillor Nazam Azam (Lab, City), pointed out that Brownroyd Street was a mainly industrial street, adding: "This won't help my constituents at all. I'm not opposed to streets in the city centre being allocated this money, but I would like there to be a bit more balance between the city centre and the residential areas in the City ward."

The committee agreed to replace the £19,000 Brownroyd Street scheme with the £12,000 Alexandra Street resurfacing works and the £7,000 Back St Margaret's Terrace works.

A reserve list of £637,000 worth or road projects in the Bradford West area will be considered in future years, or if more money is made available.

Other area committees will decide how to allocate their £300,000 later this week.
