A father and son from Bradford have used their round the world adventure to reconnect, with the pair now even working together.

Darron Speck, 48, and his son, Alex Speck-Zolte, 20, hail from Thornton and are currently on TV partaking in Race Across the World.

The show sees contestants try to get from the UK to Singapore, without the aid of a plane, smartphones or credit cards, in the fastest time. The winners are set to pocket a huge £20,000 prize.

Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus, Alex said: "Travelling completely opens your eyes to everything.

"It's made me appreciate the world more and without a doubt it's helped me reconnect with my dad.

"We're already planning other trips because we just want to get travelling again.

"We even work together now at Three Sixty (which is part of the Kelda Group, born out of Yorkshire Water)."

Darron was equally enthusiastic, and reminiscing about the trip, he said: "I think China, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan were my favourite places, visually and culturally.

"You would just sit there and couldn't even describe what you were seeing. It was breathtakingly beautiful."

Alex said: "There were so many highlights and some of the places we saw, it was honestly like something you'd see on a screensaver at home, it didn't seem real."

It was not just places which caught Alex's eye, with last Sunday's episode leaving viewers feeling the love.

Alex met with a Chinese florist while he and his dad were in the country and the two chatted away, before exchanging compliments and contact details.

He blushed: "I only started talking to her so she could help us get information for our trip but she turned out to be a really nice person.

"I've been in touch with her since and we're still talking now."

Despite the fun, it was not all plain sailing for the pair, with one sea trip leaving Darron feeling particularly blue.

He admitted: "We were stuck for five days on the Caspian Sea and I really got cabin fever.

"We were just stuck in a confined space with bad food and a lack of drinking water. It was a pretty bumpy ride too.

There were money problems on the trip too. In a good position in the race in Episode Two, Darron and Alex were thwarted by a currency issue trying to get a bus to Ankara, in Turkey.

Alex admitted: "We only had Euros and it meant that others were able to move in front while we were stuck. We were worried we were going to be eliminated."

Darron said: "We were losing a lot of our budget as the trip went on. It was a case of: Can we afford to do this or that?

"We'd be going into restaurants and not even eating, or just getting the cheapest thing on the menu. We didn't even know what we were ordering half the time.

"We even tried crickets and witchetty grubs."

Tune in to Sunday's penultimate episode at 8pm on BBC2, to see whether Darron and Alex move one step closer to winning the Race Across the World.
