A TALENTED team of Year 8 and 9 students from West Craven High School in Barnoldswick, has qualified for the regional final of a STEM competition.
Students Michael Hardwick, Poppy Hill, Jamie Noon, Amber Muller, Katie Wilkinson and Sam Woodruff were chosen to represent the school in the Go4SET event held at Blackburn College.
The team was challenged to design and construct a free standing paper giraffe, using just 25 sheets of A4 paper, a paper cup and a roll of sticky tape. It had to stand unaided for at least 10 seconds and it had to have a head, ears, tail and legs.
Competing against seven other Lancashire secondary schools, the West Craven team won the challenge by constructing the tallest paper giraffe that the Go4SET organisers have seen at any event in the past four years.
Over the next 10 weeks the team from West Craven will be working on a project with a local engineering entrepreneur to help solve an environmental issued, and in July, they will return to Blackburn to compete in the Go4SET regional final.
Anne Bonney, Principal of West Craven High School, said: “We are delighted with how well our team did in the first round of this STEM challenge and are really looking forward to following their progress with their mentor over the next 10 weeks. We can’t wait to support them in the regional final in July.”
