BRADFORD Council will aim to end the use of single use plastics by 2024 - but have stopped short of vowing to be completely “plastic free.”

The Council recently completed a review of single use plastics in the district, which made suggestions including that the authority could be plastic free in the next five years.

That would include replacing plastic cups, straws and cutlery used at Council facilities and events.

The review was discussed by the Council’s Regeneration and Environment Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday evening, where members voted to move ahead with its recommendations.

Review suggests Bradford Council should be 'plastic free' by 2024

Councillor Martin Love (Green, Shipley) questioned the motion’s wording to be “plastic free” by 2024, saying it would be more realistic to aim to be “single use plastic free.” He said: “Plastic in a product that is going to last 50 years isn’t the problem.”

Other suggestions in the review are that Council staff responsible for purchasing goods be trained to look at alternatives to plastic, that the Council works with businesses that offer customers recycling schemes and that plastic bin liners in parks be replaced with biodegradable bags.
