A “CALCULATING, manipulative, deceitful and violent” rapist has been jailed for more than 13 years for a string of offences.

The 22-year-old, who the Telegraph & Argus has decided not to name in order to preserve the anonymity of his victim, controlled his former partner during their relationship.

He was found guilty on Monday of raping the woman, assault causing actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour.

He had also previously pleaded guilty to witness intimidation, controlling behaviour, perjury and conspiracy to smuggle mobile phones into prison while he was on remand.

The man has been jailed for a total of 13 and a half years, including 11 and a half years for rape, and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

In sentencing, Judge David Hatton QC, said: “You were driven by jealousy or a desire to simply intimidate that young woman.

“You sought to control every aspect of her life, including her meeting with friends and family, her clothing and her work, and this included some violence.

“You caused her a nasal injury, and you contacted her even after you had separated and were in another relationship.

“You met her and went to her house and you raped her.

“Not satisfied with that you assaulted her with a screwdriver, causing her injury to her vaginal wall.

“The rape was the culmination of a long series of controlling behaviour.”

For six months after his arrest, up until his first trial, he continued his coercive behaviour with the “sole purpose to pressurise your victim to tell lies about your conduct”.

He made hundreds of phone calls to her, and then during his trial committed perjury by lying about contacting her in prison, causing the trial to be aborted.

Judge Hatton continued: “Your behaviour was with the sole aim of defeating justice and saving your own skin.

“You forged a letter claiming she had sent it to you and demonstrated the lengths you were prepared to go to.

“You also conspired to smuggle phones into prison to facilitate your intimidation.

“Finally, having been granted bail after the trial was aborted, you had the gall within hours of your release to visit your victim again and assault her.

“The effect on your young and vulnerable victim has been marked.

“Although she is making progress getting her life back together, the psychological scars have no disappeared.

“All of these offences demonstrate you are a calculating, manipulative, deceitful and violent young man.”
