MORE than 120 bags of rubbish were collected from the streets of Heaton, Manningham and Girlington on Saturday as part of the Great Bradford Spring Clean.

Fifty-five volunteers of all ages, including children as young as four years old, chipped in to help with the large operation.

The work began at 10am in Manningham and Heaton, before a break for refreshments at the Millan Centre and at the Lunch Monkey on Emm Lane.

The afternoon was spent in Girlington, with lunch provided by volunteers at the Girlington Community Centre. Work finished around 4.30pm.

Members of the public stopped to offer words of encouragement and in one case, a local businesswoman made a financial contribution towards the expenses.

Councillors called by to see the work that was being done and the fine weather on the day was a bonus.

Sonja McNally, of Heaton Township Association, said: "It was a lovely sociable occasion with people chatting afterwards over lunch. I’d say it was a huge success."

The Bradford West Spring Clean took place during the month-long Great British Spring Clean promoted by the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign.
