A BRADFORD woman is thrilled after an appeal for photos of her deceased mother led to a breakthrough.

Amanda Appleyard contacted the Telegraph & Argus last month to tell all about the sad situation.

Her mum, Kathleen Mary Appleyard (née Burton), was born in Holme Wood and also lived in Undercliffe, but she was just 34 when she passed away.

Daughter Amanda was just five years old at the time and had no memories or photos of Kathleen.

Amanda has just turned 50, and with her 22-year-old daughter Courtney having moved to Nevada with her American husband earlier this year, the pair were determined to have something to remember Kathleen by.

An anonymous donor has come up with the goods and sent in a precious photo of Kathleen and support for the appeal has stretched far and wife.

Thrilled Tyersal resident Amanda said: "I've had well wishers and responses from Canada, America and New Zealand about the appeal.

"My friend from Ontario, Beverley Whittaker, has really got behind the appeal and I really wanted to thank my congregation at the Vine community centre on Parsonage Road (in Laisterdyke).

"They've been saying their prayers and sending their wishes. The vicar, Helen Hodgson, has always been there for me regarding my mother too.

"Finally, I wanted to thank the Whitehorn family, who have kept praying for me."

Amanda added: "Courtney is really pleased we've managed to get a picture. My auntie Audrey lives in New Zealand and I think she'd like a copy, as would my nephew Matthew."

Amanda came to visit the T&A last week with the photo she had been given. It had a green tinge and a white mark over Kathleen's mouth.

We were determined to ensure Amanda had a photo worthy of the mother she never knew, so our chief photographer Mike Simmonds got to work.

Using the skills and tools at his disposal, he managed to touch the photo up, returning it to its original black and white and removing the mark.

He made five copies so Amanda's family members far and wide could have the photo on display in their homes.

Originally, Amanda was not keen to have her photo taken, but she rang up on Monday to say she appreciated everything we had done, and if we wanted, we could take a picture of her receiving the new copy.

Mike made sure to put Amanda's photo of Kathleen in a frame, and we presented it to her at her home on Sutton Road in Tyersal yesterday.

In exchange, she sent us a thank you card. It was the happy ending we were all after.
