A DIESEL spillage in a beck near Queensbury Tunnel is being investigated by the Environment Agency.

Campaigners fighting to save the historic railway tunnel from closure - and see it turned into a cycle path - say they spotted oil in Hole Bottom Beck at the end of last month.

Hole Bottom Beck is one of several watercourses that come together to form Bradford Beck and it flows northwards from Queensbury, passing within yards of the disused tunnel.

Part of the work at the site involves pumping an estimated 6.6 million gallons of floodwater from the tunnel and is being carried out by Highways England contractors AMCO-Giffen.

Highways England said their contractors were not working when the spillage was discovered.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “The Environment Agency is investigating potential pollution incident near Queensbury Tunnel following reports of oil being visible in a nearby beck.

"While we cannot comment on investigations while they are live, we would advise anyone to report any pollution to our incident hotline on 0800 807060 so we can investigate.”
