AN MP is urging school children to get involved in a competition aimed at promoting integration and community cohesion by celebrating their British Hero.

After the success of last year’s competition, Shipley MP Philip Davies is again asking primary and secondary school pupils across the constituency to draw or write about a person who stands out to them.

Two of Yorkshire’s own heroes, Olympic triathletes Jonny and Alistair Brownlee, will help judge the entries alongside Mr Davies, T&A editor Nigel Burton, Bradford Council Chief Executive Kersten England and Director of NEESIE Noreen Khan.

Mr Davies said: “This competition is designed to unite everyone in our pride for our country and to celebrate those extraordinary people who have gone before us that have made our country great.

“The calibre of entries last year has encouraged me to want to run the competition again this year and I hope many students get involved and submit their work.”

Mr Davies said after last year's competition: “I am extremely grateful to the schools and pupils who entered the competition. We had an impressive number of entries and the quality was of an incredibly high standard.

“Entries ranged from the very personal to the obscure, but in every case a great deal of time, effort and research had gone into them."

The subjects chosen by the winning children ranged from the likes of Princess Diana, Roald Dahl and Amelia Earhart to members of their family they admire.

More than 400 entries were sent in from across the Shipley constituency and every child who entered got a certificate signed by Mr Davies.

Entries must be in by Friday, April 26, and winners will be announced and prizes awarded in June.

Bradford Council has donated money towards some of the prizes. Prizes last year included Harry Potter World tickets, Cadbury world tour, tours of Parliament with first class travel to London and Bradford City tickets.
