A new street has been named in honour of a legendary Yorkshire cricketer.
The street in Baildon has been named today Brian Close Walk in honour of Brian Close, the former Yorkshire and England captain, who died in September 2015, aged 84.
Brian captained Yorkshire to four County Championship titles and was at the time the youngest man to make his test debut for England when he was aged just 18.
The street sign was unveiled this morning by Brian’s widow, Vivien Close.
Throughout his long career, Brian played in 22 test matches for England captaining seven with six wins and one draw. He scored almost 35,000 runs as a batsman and made 52 centuries. He also took 1,168 wickets, 800 catches and one stumping as a stand-in wicket-keeper. Yorkshire housing developer Pinnacle View Homes are building the houses. The proposal to name the new street on the development after Brian was put forward by Baildon Town Council which was taken to the Shipley Area Committee, where it was agreed.
