BRADFORD Council has now submitted its full scheme to re-develop a city centre street to create a new market and public square.

The authority first revealed its plan to demolish a number of buildings on Darley Street, including the former Marks & Spencer building, and build a new food market and public square in their place.

The development is expected to cost at least £21 million.

Now a full planning application for the development has been submitted, detailing the layout, elevations, and access for deliveries among other things.

The changes will be part of a major shake up of the city's markets. The Oastler Centre will close, with food stalls opening in this new market and non-food stalls moving to a refurbished Kirkgate Market.

To view the application type in reference 19/00737/REG on Bradford Council's planning portal website. People have until May 20 to have their say.

The Council has also set up an online survey to gather people's views of the scheme.

Bradford city centre to see drastic Darley Street makeover

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Planning and Transport on the Council, said: “This is a major step in realising this significant transformational project.

“The markets would help redefine Darley Street and the city centre, and showcase the fantastic Victorian buildings on Piccadilly by making them a lot more visible.

“The project is part of a broad package of initiatives designed to boost investment, growth and employment across the Bradford district.”
