A FILM of ‘significant importance’ with a following live streamed question and answer session with the director is due to be screened by Settle Stories on Sunday.

Letter from Masanjia tells the story of an Oregon woman who finds an SOS message from a Chinese dissident amongst some Halloween decorations. The discovery sets off a chain of events that eventually shuts down the entire labour camp system in China and ignites the letter-writer’s dangerous quest to expose a deadly persecution.

The screening will be the second film as part of Settle Stories ‘Lazy Sunday Afternoon Film Club’, where people can enjoy a film and a cup of tea in the charity’s new venue the Joinery, behind Ye Olde Naked Man cafe,.

The film will be followed by a live question and answer session with film Director Leon Lee that will be live streamed into the Joinery.

Settle Stories director, Sita Brand, says it will be an opportunity for people to find out more about how the film was made which is in itself a fascinating story. Lee was banned from his native country China due to his previous work exposing human rights abuses, which meant he had to direct the film remotely using Skype.

‘Here at Settle Stories we love celebrating and telling Craven and Yorkshire stories but we also enjoy bringing international stories from across the globe to Settle for our audiences as well.”

The screening will take place on Sunday at 2pm at The Joinery, behind Ye Olde Naked Man Cafe. Tickets for Letter from Masanjia are £5 and are available online at:settlestories.org.uk/letterfrommasanjia or by calling Settle Stories Box Office on 05603 845693
