HEALTH drinks being sold at a Wrexham Council-owned leisure centre are the latest to be investigated by Public Protection officers.

Smoothies, produced by a multi-million pound third party company and being sold at Waterworld Leisure & Activity Centre, are being checked to see if they are "compliant".

This latest row follows the much publicised fall out between the council and the owners of Raw Juice, a small business on Rhosddu Road, who landed themselves in hot water after they were accused of promoting false or misleading health benefits in their juices and smoothies.

Gareth and Leanne Roberts took the “heartbreaking” decision to close the business a couple of weeks ago after being told there was enough evidence to proceed with a prosecution after being interviewed under caution.

Phil Plowman, managing mirector of The Love Taste Company, which produces the drinks sold at Waterworld, has confirmed the company is aware of the issue being raised by Wrexham Council.

He said: "The investigation is ongoing and the next stage, if required, would be for us to receive specific details from the council."

The company has grown rapidly in the last decade and now supplies more than 5,000 customers in the UK including: Pret a Manger, Virgin Active, Ocado and Sainsbury’s and internationally supplies 25 markets including in Dubai, Singapore, Shanghai, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Scandinavia and Australia.

A spokesman for Freedom Leisure, which operates the centre on behalf of the council, said: "Wrexham Waterworld is working with the local Public Protection department to check that third-party smoothie products sold at the centre are compliant."

Wrexham Council declined to add to the Freedom Leisure statement.
