ONE of Haworth's 1940s Weekend's volunteer organisers warned that a fundraising drive for the event needs more public support to ensure this year's weekend goes ahead.

Andrea Leathley urged people to get behind the appeal, which was launched last year to fund a professional team to manage the popular occasion.

Mrs Leathley said a pair of entertainment nights, a jumble sale and an auction had together so far raised £1,000.

More entertainments are scheduled for this spring before the 2019 1940s Weekend, which is due to take place on May 18 and 19.

But organisers have said they need to collect about £10,000, which would be used to pay people to handle health and safety, traffic and road management, marshalling, and communications.

Mrs Leathley said: "Even if many people give only £1 each – which really isn't a lot – all those pounds would add up.

"We do have a JustGiving page, but that's going a bit slowly at the moment, so we could really do with people's help. We need people to take this seriously."

The most recent fundraising entertainment evening was an Elvis Presley Tribute act in Haworth Village Hall on February 9.

Mrs Leathley said: "It was an absolutely brilliant night, it went really well. About 80 people came along."

The next event is a night at Haworth's King's Arms Pub themed around TV drama Peaky Blinders. This starts at 8pm on March 29. It will feature raffles and a casino as well as 1920s period dress.
