A CAFE at a Bradford park suffered from attempted break ins arson that led to its security shutters being damaged.

Bradford Council has submitted a planning application for new security shutters on the Boat House cafe on Lister Park's lake.

The cafe is a key feature in the park, which has been named Britain's Best Park in the past.

The planning application says: "The café is vulnerable to vandalism and has suffered fire damage and a break in recent months.

"The break in has damaged the curved vertical shuttering system that secured the building and is now beyond repair."

The cost of replacing the existing shutter system was "prohibitive" and so the Council has applied for plans to replace it with six vertical security shutters.

A heritage statement by the Council says the impact of the new shutters on the park's appearance would be "neutral."

The privately run cafe is seasonal, and opens between April and October.

A Bradford Council spokesperson, said: “Lister Park’s cafe shutters were seriously damaged during a break-in last autumn. We are proposing the most cost effective replacement which will be in keeping with the original design.”

A decision on the application is expected next month.
