A PUBLIC consultation on plans to introduce 20mph zones across Bradford city centre has now begun.

Bradford Council plans to reduce the speed limits on city centre roads, although not main roads like Manchester Road or Hall Ings.

The plans were approved by the authority's Executive last month, but now have to go out to public consultation, which runs to March 5.

Council approves 20mph zones in Bradford city centre and around two schools

The scheme is predicted to cost around £120,000 and at the Executive meeting where the new limits were approved, Councillor Alex Ross Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and highways said: "This is a really good step forward for the city centre and it supports our regeneration agenda.

"Think about what's going to be opening in the next few years. You have New College which will bring in hundreds of sixth form students to the city, Bradford Live, the Rugby League Museum, St George's Hall re-opening. We will have a lot more visitors into the city centre and it will feel a very different place. With these changes it will be a much safer environment for people. It will help make the city centre a better place to visit, live and work."

20mph zones will also be introduced outside of the city centre on Park Lane and Farnham Road, both of which are areas that include primary schools and community centres.

The plans are able to view online, and will also be on display on Tuesday February 26 at the Oastler Centre between 1pm and 4pm, and on Wednesday February 27 at McMillan Tower between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.
