Five people have been charged in a police crackdown on beggars in three areas of Bradford.

Officers took action on Great Horton Road, Four Lane Ends and in Manningham.

Some of those arrested were found to be in breach of Criminal Behaviour Orders.

PC Chris Cahill, a Bradford West Outer City Officer, tweeted: “Begging crackdown tonight on Great Horton Road, Manningham and Four Lanes end “6 arrested, 5/6 charged with begging and a first time offender given an out of court disposal.

“Hoping we connected with them, to encourage new behaviours and support.”

Those that are genuinely homeless were offered support and referred to pathways for further help.

A majority of those charged were found to have fixed abodes and were in receipt of some form of Universal Credit.

Some were found in breach of Criminal Behaviour Orders and have shown a disregard for instructions given by the courts.

PC Cahill said: “While it is not always practicable to challenge this criminal offence on the spot, due to other competing demands; tonight we have had dedicated time to tackle the problem head on as a team.

"Those targeted are persistent beggars, known to intimidate and make members of the public feel uneasy whilst parked at traffic lights and such.

"I would like to thank my colleagues who have taken time out of their own duties to help confront our ward priorities together.”

PS Jodie Scatchard added: “There are services available to all those in need in Bradford, unfortunately not all people wish to engage with this help through personal choice, leaving the police to process them through criminal justice channels.

"I hope tonight's interactions with our team will encourage these persons to seek the help they need.”
