SECURITY has been bolstered at the University of Bradford and bosses have put a number of new measures in place to keep students safe.

This comes after female students in the city said they felt unsafe at night and are frequently harassed by some of their male peers.

The women claimed they had been told by university staff to not visit the campus library alone at night and make sure they go in small groups - but a spokesman for the university said this advice was never given out.

One of the students, who declined to be named, said: "We are to walk around in groups.

"We can't go to the library at night because we might be attacked.

"Instead of making it so two or three students have to walk around together, why not try to make the campus safer."

The student said she feels Bradford is not a safe place to study and more must be done to look after women.

However, the bosses at the University of Bradford say they are doing more to protect students and a spokesman says it takes the safety of its staff and students very seriously.

Amongst the new measures introduced, include an increased number of patrols and CCTV on campus, while security staff now use bikes to move faster around the grounds if there is an incident.

The university also has its own West Yorkshire police officer on the campus and he works directly with the security team.

Nikki Pierce, Academic Registrar, Director of Student and Academic Services, said: "We would always advise our students to avoid walking around on their own late at night wherever they are in the city.

"We have never specifically pin pointed the library in this advice.

“The University takes student and staff safety extremely seriously and our security team work with the police to make the campus as safe an environment as possible. Sadly, as with the rest of the city, of which the campus is a part, incidents can still happen and we work closely with the police to ensure that these are dealt with as quickly as possible.”

"We have increased security presence, patrols and CCTV around campus and our security team use bikes to get across a largely pedestrianised campus quickly. We work closely with the council and police on wider city safety initiatives and now have our own dedicated police officer on campus. PC James Preston works closely with our Security team to help keep staff and students safe while on campus.

"We have launched a free new app service for staff and students to provide a quick and easy way to alert our Security team when help or assistance is needed, via your mobile phone or tablet."
