PEOPLE in Yorkshire will be the loneliest on the most romantic day of the year this week, a new survey has revealed.

The research found 39 per cent of people in Yorkshire are not planning on celebrating Valentine’s Day, February 14, this year, the highest percentage in the UK, followed by Merseyside and the West Midlands.

Carried out by online gift retailer Personally Presented, the research also found on average men will spend 56 per cent more on a Valentine’s Day gift to show their love than women will.

More than half of men plan to buy a gift for the day, spending on average £49, compared to 37 per cent of women who plan on spending £31.

The biggest spenders are men aged 29 to 39, with 65 per cent of men buying gifts, spending an average of £60 on the present.

As people get older, the likelihood of them buying a gift for their partner or date declines steadily, with 46 per cent of women aged 18 to 28 buying a gift, compared to 28 per cent of women aged 61 and over.

It’s estimated £620 million will be spent on Valentine’s gifts this year.
