A NUMBER of roads in Batley are expected to remain closed today, following a gas explosion in the town last night.

Five people were injured by the blast, which happened at a property in Hick Lane, at the junction with Bradford Road, at around 6.50pm yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and a police cordon was put in place, which has remained in place overnight.

Some people were taken to hospital and treated for burns.

Police have warned motorists to plan alternative routes into and through the town today due to road closures still in place.

They said: "A police cordon remains in place this morning following the suspected gas explosion last night in Batley.

"Road closures will remain in place while police continue to conduct enquiries. Please avoid the area where possible and find alternative routes."

Fire crews from the Bradford district were among the ten crews called to the scene, with some still at the incident this morning.
