A Rotherham precinct could be renamed Chuckle Square in memory of entertainer Barry Elliott, better known as Barry Chuckle, if councillors uphold a 681 name petition asking for the change.
Rotherham Councillors who sit on the authority’s scrutiny board will be asked to decide whether to support the application when they meet on Wednesday February 14, after the petition was submitted to the council last month.
It has been gathered by a local newspaper and would see the area outside Boots’ store in the town centre renamed Chuckle Square, in memory of Mr Elliott.
He was better known as Barry Chuckle, one half of the town’s Chuckle Brothers who became an entertainment phenomenon.
He died in August last year, aged 73, following a short illness.
If scrutiny board members reject the proposal, there will be no further action, but if it is approved the idea will be discussed further within the council.
The lead petitioner will have opportunity to address councillors and question officers for up to five minutes on matters surrounding their application.
