OVER 750 people have had their say on major road plans between Shipley and Bradford.

The £42 million Bradford to Shipley Route Improvement Project will see roads widened and new cycle and bus routes installed on key routes between the two areas.

A consultation on the proposals ends on Friday.

At a meeting of Bradford Council’s Executive yesterday, Council bosses were presented with a petition signed by over 300 people raising concerns about the works – in particular the demolition of the Branch Pub to make way for junction improvements.

It called for the council to better consider the health of children at nearby Shipley CE Primary School, and to look at more environmentally friendly measures, such as walking and cycling routes.

None of the petitioners attended the meeting, but highways officers pointed out that so far the public consultation had attracted 750 responses, and 6,500 people had visited a website created detailing the scheme.

Council Leader Susan Hinchcliffe said: “The fact that the petitioners are not here may be a sign that they have been re-assured by the consultation. We’re keen to embrace measures like new cycle and walking routes as part of this, as we need more people to get out of cars.”

The scheme is being funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Councillor Alex Ross Shaw, Executive for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said the Council would be speaking with the head and governors of Shipley CofE about details of the scheme in the near future.
