A former infantryman from the Bradford district will take part in an arduous run to raise hundreds for a military veterans’ charity.

Andy Spence, who lives in the Ingrow area of Keighley, has signed up for the Run to Pegasus, which takes place on June 4.

He explained: “Run To Pegasus is a gruelling event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day, and to honour the men who spearheaded the entire invasion.

“We’ll start at Tarrant Rushton Airfield, Dorset, and make our way to the New Forest and down to Portsmouth, covering 62 miles in under 24 hours.

“We then get the ferry to France and onward to Pegasus Bridge, in Normandy.”

The original bridge was the objective for one of the most audacious operations of D-Day.

The bridge was captured by British airborne troops at the beginning of the assault to liberate France.

Mr Spence, who serves in the reservist 212 Field Hospital, said: “My target is a minimum of £1,000 to raise for The Veterans Charity. It’s an amazing organisation that supports veterans in their darkest moments.

People can visit justgiving.com/fundraising/andrew-spence1977 to support Mr Spence.

In urging people to take part, a spokesman for the event said: "Join us to pay tribute to past Heroes whilst supporting Heroes of today."
