SPEED bumps will be installed on a Bradford Road in an effort to improve road safety.

At a meeting of the Bradford South Area Committee on Thursday, Councillors approved plans for a number of road safety measures on Netherlands Avenue.

The road is an access only road, but recent traffic surveys have found that up to 4,000 vehicles a day pass through it. In 2016 residents petitioned for traffic calming measures to deter people from using the road, and to reduce speeds of vehicles that do. A £30,000 scheme to install speed humps, refuge islands and new crossing points along the road has now been approved.

At Thursday's meeting Councillor David Green (Lab, Wibsey) said: "Making this road safer was one of my first jobs when I got elected in 1991, and there have been a number of schemes proposed since then.

"A lot of people breach the access only rule, and the policing of that is getting more difficult.

"There have been a number of accidents on this road as a result of speeding. I think this is the best option that we can come up with."

Some people had objected to the proposals, saying many drivers will ignore the traffic calming measures and still speed down the road. Cllr Green said: "You can't legislate for idiots. If people still want to speed down that road after the traffic calming has been installed it's their own cars they'll ruin.

"It will encourage people to use more acceptable roads when going to and from the motorway."
