A THEATRE group which is nearly 90 years old is embarking on a new era with the launch of a revamped name and brand.

Yeadon Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society - affectionately known as Yeadon Amateurs - has now become Yeadon Theatre Company.

A spokeswoman said: “The idea for re-branding was brought about by an increasing awareness to adapt to modern times. It was felt that the name was dated and did not reflect the talent involved and the quality of the shows of today. The members felt the new name, Yeadon Theatre Company, would identify with the present generation wanting to perform in this area and be in line with the culture that the organisation has evolved into. “

She added: “Regardless of rebranding, Yeadon Theatre Company still maintains most aspects of the society’s constitution and its core philosophy has not changed. It continues to hold charitable status and respectfully takes into consideration views of long-standing members who have kept the YTC functioning successfully for many years.”

YAODS was formed in 1930 and stages two shows a year in October and March in Yeadon Town Hall. The group raises money for good causes, including Martin House Hospice, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Candlelighters. It has won numerous awards for its productions and members are regulars at the Wharfedale Festival of Theatre Awards.

The spokeswoman said: “It is amazing to think that Yeadon Theatre Company is nearly 90 years old and has survived the Second World War and many of the ups and downs common to amateur theatre groups over the years. It is also incredible that it has maintained many loyal and active members throughout the generations, who are still passionate about their organisation to this day and are truly responsible for its survival.”
