A NEW boys’ school will be built on the site of the former Morrisons headquarters - but its pupils will be taught in temporary classrooms for two years.

Eden Boys Leadership Academy is due to open to its first pupils in September. Star Academies Trust, which will run the school, had said it would be based on Thornton Road, but until this week the actual location had not been revealed.

A joint planning application submitted this week by the Department of Education and Star Academies has revealed that the former site of Hilmore House - Morrisons old headquarters, will be where the school is based.

The application is for two temporary buildings, and says a permanent school on the site is unlikely to be complete until 2021.

The site is a short distance from the Thornton Road/Ingleby Road junction and the school site will be just metres from a KFC takeaway.

Hilmore House was demolished in 2006, and the site has been vacant ever since.

EDUCATION: New College Bradford gets 1,000 applications, before it's even been built

Eden Boys Bradford will be a Muslim faith school, although the trust’s website says it is “welcoming applications from pupils of all faiths and none.”

When the school opens in September it will have 120 Year 7 pupils, with another 120 pupils joining each year until it reaches its capacity of 800 pupils.

But for the first two years it appears that the pupils will be taught in temporary classrooms, including a temporary dining area.

There will be a two storey teaching building and a single storey dining/multipurpose building. The plans also include a temporary tarmacadam play area and a storage container that will be used to house sports equipment. A 30 space car park will also make up the temporary school development.

If the new application is approved by Bradford Council, the temporary school will be built on the corner of Thornton Road and Rosse Street. The full school will be built on the remainder of the site, but the application says that permanent school building will not be ready until 2021.

The planning application says: “The temporary school will be operational on site for a period of two years. In the first year it will cater for Year 7 [120 boys] and the second year will cater for Years 7 and 8 [240 boys].

“There will be a maximum of approximately 24 full time equivalent staff.”

Star Academies Trust runs a number of schools in Bradford, including Tong Leadership Academy and Laisterdyke Leadership Academy.

A decision on the application is expected in April.

The school will be one of a number of new educational facilities opening in Bradford this September - transforming the educational make up of the city.

Feversham Education Trust will open Bronte Girls School in Future House - former Council offices on Bolling Road.

The Dixons Academy Chain is opening a new sixth form college in Douglas Mill on Bowling Old Lane.

And the New Collaborative Learning Trust is opening another sixth form college - New College Bradford, on the site of the former Britannia Mills.

Due to government legislation, only academy trusts are able to open new schools, with the power removed from local councils.
