OXENHOPE Social Club managed to go ahead with its farewell party despite criminal damage to its property.

A man was caught on CCTV putting glue into the building's lock on the afternoon of Friday January 25.

Despite this, the building's managers were able to open the premises later that evening, and the closing down party went ahead as planned the following night.

The criminal damage is now being investigated by the police, and a West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed enquiries were ongoing.

As previously reported, the committee in charge of the club – known locally as The Idiot Hut – had announced the venue would have to shut due to a lack of revenue. The Lowertown-based club, which ceased trading on January 27, had been running since 1937.

A spokesman for the committee said the man who glued the club's lock was recorded on CCTV at about 1.30pm on January 25.

The spokesman added: "We still opened up at 7.30pm that night, and we had our last party the evening afterwards. It was an absolutely fantastic night. We had a live band and the place was packed."

Commenting on the attempted sabotage, he said: "It was just nastiness really, trying to spoil it for everyone. The police are now involved."
