A EURO MP has blamed Brexit for Santander's plans to close a branch in Southend High Street.

Bank bosses announced on Wednesday the high street branch will close in November.

It will be joined by the branch in London Road, in Hadleigh, which will shut in May.

Branches in South Woodham Ferrers is also set for the axe.

Labour MEP Alex Mayer said: "The closure of Southend, South Woodham Ferrers and Epping's Santander branches is just the latest episode in the long term decline of our high streets.

This will be distressing news for their staff and families."

She added: “Last October, Santander said that Britain’s exit from the European Union would trigger a period of high uncertainty that could significantly impact Santander’s business."

"Our high streets are under pressure like never before and the uncertainty around Brexit cannot be helping."
