GET ready to put the pedal to the metal: Bradford’s new state-of-the-art go-karting track officially opens tomorrow.

The TeamSport circuit, at Beckside Road Business Park, opens after a £1 million investment in the site, creating a 580 metre, multi-level track, where you can race at up to 40 miles per hour.

Ahead of the opening, a team of racers from the Telegraph & Argus were invited down to the track to put their driving to the test as some of the first people to take on the circuit.

Walking out on to the new track, described by one member of staff as TeamSport’s “best track in the country”, the nerves kicked in.

The tight track provides a great adrenaline rush, with close-quarter, wheel-to-wheel and bumper-to-bumper action, plenty of overtaking and the occasional bump or crash.

The petrol-powered karts provide a test of your driving skills; too hard on the brakes and you could end up spinning, too cautious on the accelerator and you’ll be left eating your opponent’s dust.

Featuring two ramps, four hairpin turns and a number of fast paced corners, it tests you both mentally and physically as you battle to keep the kart in a straight line.

As a benchmark, you should be aiming to get round the circuit in under 60 seconds, braver more skilful drivers could target a time in the low 50s.

Brad Deas somehow managed to set the fastest time at 58.17 seconds, despite spending half the race facing the wrong way after spinning out, followed closely by hotheaded Alex Ross in second and myself in third.

Nathan Atkinson brought up the rear, not helped by getting shunted into the crash barriers by Alex and his lack of a driving licence!

He said: “I may have limped home in last place but it was a great on-track experience.

“It was the best go-karting circuit I’ve ever been on and next time I’ll try to be a bit less cautious and go all out for the win.”

Alex added: “It was a lot of fun – the track was great and I really enjoyed the racing.

“Going up and down the ramps and taking the sharp corners at speed – without trying to spin – made for a thrilling ride.”

Gracious in victory, Brad said: "I was very pleased to beat my competitors, I've always thought of myself as a future Michael Schumacher.

"It was very enjoyable, the track was very smooth and quick, and it was fun battling with my colleagues."

Norris Royal, site manager of the Bradford track, said: “We’re excited, its a great pleasure bringing this business to Bradford.

“It gives a lot of young people and businesses the opportunity to see what we’ve got, and provide a lot of employment for young people in the community.

“You can expect, fun and phenomenal excitement on the track, we’re open six or seven days a week.

“It was epic fun watching you guys out there, David and Alex took charge of the event and it was great seeing you guys compete, leaving each other in the dust literally!

“The experience I’ve got from driving on the track and what you’ve had is we have got it right, the track is great and we made the right decision in coming to Bradford.”
