SIR - It is truly sad to hear how central government cuts are to be enacted by our local council, once more hitting the libraries hard. Libraries are much more than a source of knowledge, education and entertainment.

They are social places, where people can go to be in a calming and relaxed environment and be in the company of others.

There are people of all ages, from the excited chatter of the very young, sometimes joining in with a song, to the very old, life-long reader, searching for a particular book, they've read many times before.

Most importantly, they're a friendly, familiar place TO GO, that (normally) has no financial cost.

The place which gives up on its libraries, is a much poorer place.
