BRADFORD Council should call for a "zero tolerance" approach to crime - according to a new motion.

At a meeting of the full Council tomorrow afternoon, Councillor John Pennington, leader of the Conservatives on the Council, will put forward a motion regarding violence against the community.

He says there has been an increase in violent crimes in the district, and some shops have been plagued by crimes such as thefts of charity boxes.

Other businesses have been repeatedly targeted, he claims.

And Cllr Pennington says many people believe they have not had an adequate response from West Yorkshire Police when they do report crimes.

His motion will call for the Council to ask the Home Office to increase funding to the 101 service, as well as Crimestoppers charity, "consider the introduction of zero tolerance policing methods in Bradford District" and encourage local schools to introduce "teaching of the need for people to make good choices in life, understanding their responsibilities to become good citizens."

His motion also calls for the Council and police to "Utilise crime data to inform decisions regarding the provision of crime and anti social behaviour projects to benefit residents, visitors and businesses alike."

The Council meets in City Hall at 4pm.
