A MEMORIAL service is to be held later this month to celebrate the life and achievements of the late councillor Ian Greenwood.

It will take place on January 25, at 4pm, at Bradford Cathedral, and is a chance for people to remember a man who was twice leader of Bradford Council during a political career that spanned five decades.

Cllr Greenwood, who died at the age of 68 on November 12 after a short illness, has been described as "one of Bradford's finest public servants" and a "strong and loud servant of Bradford".

He first represented Little Horton ward as a Labour councillor from 1995 to 2012. He returned to the Council last year to represent Bolton and Undercliffe ward.

He had previously served on West Yorkshire County Council, as the chairman and latterly vice-chairman of the West Yorkshire Pension Fund, and forged a national profile in the pensions industry as chairman of the Local Authorities Pensions Fund Forum, representing funds with a combined value of £230 billion.

He was also on dozens of panels on Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Furthermore, In 2013 he was awarded the OBE for services to local government.

He also achieved national prominence within the Labour Party and the trade union movement.

Following a private funeral, his close friend and colleague, Susan Hinchcliffe said the service would be an opportunity for everyone who knew him to gather and pay their respects.

Cllr Hinchcliffe, leader of Bradford Council, said: “Ian played an important part in the lives of many, many people from all walks of life and all parts of the country and it’s right that everyone should have the chance to come together to pay their respects and celebrate his life and achievements.

“We are expecting people from far and wide including nationally-known figures such as Dave Prentis the general secretary of trade union Unison, Ian’s colleagues from the pensions industry, friends from across the political spectrum and members of the communities he worked with and represented for so many years.

“The Cathedral is a fitting place to commemorate a man who epitomised the character and spirit of Bradford and Bradfordians and who gave so much to the city during a hugely active life.

“The memorial will include music, poetry and tributes from Ian’s friends and colleagues. Everyone who wants to come is welcome.”

When his death became public in November local politicians, community and religious leaders as well as members of the public began paying tribute.

Flags at City Hall were flown at half mast as a mark of respect. A book of condolence was also opened at City Hall.

*A by-election is to be held next month to fill the seat in Bolton and Undercliffe left vacant by Cllr Greenwood's death.

Voters in that ward will go to the polls on Thursday, February 7, and this Friday is the deadline for any candidates to be nominated.

Voters must be registered with Bradford Council by January 22 in order to have their say.
