COUNCIL bosses have voted to keep a nursery in Wrose open - although with fewer pupils and staff.

The nursery at Low Ash Primary School had been at risk of closure due to the low numbers of children attending, which was putting a financial burden on the rest of the school.

A consultation was held with parents and staff, asking if the nursery should be closed, or its opening hours or pupils reduced.

Over 68 people responded, with 86 per cent of these calling for a solution that would keep the nursery open.

At a meeting of the Council's decision making Executive today, members voted to save the nursery, but with a reduced number of pupils - 26 instead of the current levels of 30. This would also reduce nursery staff by one.

The changes are due to come into play in September.

At the meeting, Councillor Imran Khan, executive for Education, Employment and Skills, said: "We do listen and it was important we let people have their say on this issue."

Council Leader Susan Hinchcliffe, who also represents Wrose, said: "As a ward councillor I am pleased this will stay open. It is an important provision for the parents of this area of the district."
