A NEW supermarket and block of industrial units could be built on a Bradford scrap yard if new plans are approved.

The site, on Spencer Road, near the junction with Beckside Road in Lidget Green, will see site transformed with a store, car park and three units, according to the plans submitted to Bradford Council.

Submitted by a Mr Hussain, the application says that the development would create 10 jobs, as well as creating a more attractive site than the existing scrap yard. It claims the area needs a “comprehensive regeneration.”

The site is classed as an Employment Zone by Bradford Council, and the applicants say the shop would bring a new amenity to the area, while the industrial units would complement the Council’s employment drive for the area.

It claims the limited size of the supermarket will mean it will not harm the viability of nearby shopping areas.

The plans will see a 39 space car park created on the land.

No details of which businesses will be based at the site have been revealed yet.

The planning application submitted to Bradford Council says: “The application site current consists of scrap yard with a large number of vehicles stacked highly within the site.

“Given the existence of residential dwellings on the northern side, the site does provide rather unattractive views from those dwellings, and poor environmental distraction.

“The general neighbourhood does require comprehensive regeneration which it is hope the project would encourage if given approval. The proposed development would improve on the environmental quality of the neighbourhood.

“The design of the units is such that it would contribute to the regeneration efforts of the area.

“The retail unit has an active frontage to Spencer Road; encouraging employment, and provides much needed amenities for the area. The industrial units would greatly compliment employment drive in the area.

“The layout of the site is such that access to the development is off Spencer Road. A new vehicular access would be created leading to a courtyard style car park is that serves both the retail and industrial units.

“There are no existing landscaping features on the site. However a scheme of comprehensive landscape will be provided to enhance the development.”

A decision on the application is expected in March.

Last year the Bradford Chamber of Commerce released a report claiming the lack of mid-sized industrial units in the Bradford District was a major obstacle to regeneration, and called for more sites to be identified.
