FESTIVE good-will is continuing until the end of January for motorists parking in a local town centre.

Calderdale Council initially reintroduced a full hour of free on-street parking in the Brighouse town centre to help boost business before Christmas.

It has now been announced that this will be extended until the end of January in a bid to continue supporting local trade.

There will also be changes made to the pricing structure for on-street parking, when it returns in February.

Previously, motorists could enjoy half an hour free parking, but there were concerns this was confusing and led to a reduction in time spent shopping, according to the council.

Come the second month of the year, the first hour of parking will cost a flat rate of 20p.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Strategy, Councillor Barry Collins, said: "After talking to traders and listening to their concerns, we’ve agreed to make some changes to the on-street parking charges in Brighouse.

"We are extending the one hour free on-street parking offer to the end of January, as we know it can be a difficult month, particularly for the retail sector."

"In our view, a modest charge of 20p for up to an hour, from February, should end any confusion caused by the previous free half-hour period and encourage space turnover so more people can visit the great independent shops and businesses in the town centre."
